W is for Warsaw, Webinars, and Werks

SA-I spy with my little eye, something that starts with the letter W… a widely read report, a worthy industry convention, a web-based seminar, and something else in the werks Shively Acoustics International (SAI) is avoiding heat waves (there’s another W-word for you) in favor of sounder ones.

So, what’s our tune for June?

Get yours!

First, a reminder that the June issue ➡️ of industry magazine audioXpress is out and has been out, so snag yourself a copy now! Why? Because in this edition, you can read yet another item beginning with W: “When Everything Is New”, the latest market report on the automotive audio industry, penned by our president Roger Shively together with Editor-in-Chief João Martins. What challenges and opportunities do AI and LLMs bring? What innovations are developing at Chinese OEMs? How is software-defined audio continuing to evolve? The in-depth report covers it all.

The major audio industry event in the past month was naturally the 2025 AES European Convention, held this year over three days in Warsaw, Poland, from May 22 to 24. For once, Roger did not write up a review of the convention for The Audio Voice newsletter from audioXpress, as our visit to AES Europe had a bit of a narrower focus this year. For the usual full write-up, we’ll refer you to João, whose coverage appeared in the Editor’s Desk in newsletter #518. Happy reading!

At AES Europe this year, Shively Acoustics was primarily engaged with the planning and proposals – something we first mentioned here last October – for the upcoming AES Show Long Beach (October 23-25) and the next AES international conference on Automotive Audio (June 2026).

Though farther off, the latter of these had more of our attention, with Roger meeting with the who’s who of Audio Engineering Society management and organizers for the conference and allotting most of his time for Technical Committee meetings, again primarily for the committee on automotive audio (TC-AA). Of particular interest, to repeat past points, is integrating the Audio Product Development Alliance (APDA) into AES activities as part of a sustained partnership to provide support and technical content for in-person and online events.

Relating this to Long Beach sooner on all our calendars, the convention is in part to serve as a vehicle (pun: intended) to generate awareness of the APDA and promote its opportunities for collaboration directly to the industry and will feature product development as a dedicated, separate track for the first time in a long time.

To that end, Roger has proposed setting up a string of tutorials on Audio Product Development topics given by the APDA, who will be present at audioXpress’s booth. Each of the planned six, one-hour tutorials would address an APDA educational pillar, with different chairs presenting on different topics, including one from Shively Acoustics.

In addition, the Long Beach planning committee intends on adding Roger as chair of the Automotive track.

Watch here!

Meanwhile in the wonderful world of webinars, the APDA just hosted #9 this past Tuesday: “Advancing Automotive Audio Through Collaboration” by Matt Marchese of Tymphany and Audio Foundry. A founding member of Audio Foundry, Matt presents on the collaborative hub and makerspace, including its conceptual origin and how its design for prototyping and advanced research is and can be utilized by innovators throughout the automotive audio sector, and how such collaboration can benefit the development of applications for enhancing the in-cabin audio experience, along with a discussion of other recent Audio Foundry projects.

In other SAI news, the MeierWerks Board of Advisors appointment first announced here in March can now be considered official: our president Roger Shively has made the team! He and Shively Acoustics are excited to contribute our expertise in the new advisory role going forward. Readers might also expect some limited MeierWerks news here in the future, insofar as it relates to our activities with them.

That brings our brief update to an end just as it does the month of June. The SAI Blog will be back again in July in no time at all. Until then, stay cool this summer and enjoy some ocean- or sound-based waves. ■
